Fitzgerald Hinds has denied allegations that he was responsible for the hiring of murdered North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) worker Jamal Watts.
In a statement, Hinds expressed "grave concern" over what he described as an "unfounded and libelous accusation" circulating on social media.
He clarified, "I have no connection with Mr. Watts' employment at the North West Regional Health Authority. Despite this erroneous claim, I acknowledge and respect Mr. Watts' lawful employment and his decision to engage in honest work rather than resort to criminal activity for income."
The Minister also acknowledged the trauma health workers experienced, referencing the horrific killings that occurred at the Port of Spain General Hospital in June. He assured the public that "the Ministry of National Security will collaborate with the Ministry of Health to provide support, including activities designed to bring relief to all staff at these institutions."
Hinds further stated that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago has recognized violence as a public health emergency and remains committed to supporting the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and other law enforcement agencies in their efforts to combat crime. The government also supports a wide range of civil society and community-based initiatives, including opportunities for youth training and development.
