Mayaro Man Fatally Shot by Police After Alleged Attack on Officer
A Mayaro man, who allegedly attacked a police officer with a cutlass, was fatally shot by officers in the early hours of Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Gabriel Hinkson, 39, of Guayaguayare Road.
According to a police report, around 3 a.m., officers from the Mayaro CID went to a garden camp approximately 150 feet along an agricultural access road off Food Crop Road Double Bridge, on Guayaguayare Road in Mayaro.
Police were searching for Hinkson, who was wanted for a recent report of malicious damage to property.
Upon arrival at a house, the officers announced their presence. Hinkson, who was reportedly armed with a cutlass, allegedly swung it at one of the constables.
The officer defended himself by blocking the cutlass with his MP5 firearm but still sustained a laceration on his left hand.
Despite calls from the officers to drop the cutlass, Hinkson allegedly raised it again and attacked. In line with the use of force policy, the officer discharged his firearm, and Hinkson was shot.
The police team transported him to the Mayaro District Hospital, where they arrived at 3:25 a.m. However, Hinkson died while receiving treatment.
ASP Beharry and Insp Ramkissoon responded to the scene, and investigations are ongoing.
